Men's/Women's Grass Triples: Specific Rules
1. Teams may play with less than 3 players, if necessary. The minimum is 2.
2. Team captains can add as many subs as they want to their rosters, so it is recommended that they take advantage of this to avoid having their team show up with less than a full lineup.
Co-ed reverse 4's: Specific Rules
Teams Reverse 4's is a classic grass volleyball format! It has male and female players participating on the same team, at the same time.
1. Must have 2 females and 2 males on the court
2. Male athletes attack back row and can only block males
3. Female athletes can attack front row and block
4. Servers alternate through serving order
5. Teams may play with less than 4 players provided they have at least 1 female on the court.
6. The minimum number of players required to avoid defaulting is 2 for Reverse 4’s. There must be at least one player of each gender.
7. Men must take off from behind the attack line when spiking (i.e. back-row attacks only).
8. Men can only block men. Classic point of contention. Team A serves the ball. A male athlete from Team B overpasses the ball. Can a male from Team A "flush" the overpass as a block? Yes.
9. Men can play the ball while standing in front of the attack line; however, the ball must travel in an upwards trajectory and must cross the opposing team’s attack line. This is important when setting the ball over (as a male player, you must set a ball over with noticeable arc, on top of it needing to cross an attack line, and you being square to where you are setting)
10. In rare situations, teams may play with 3 women and 1 male, as long as one of the female players is playing with the male restrictions (this exception need to be cleared with the tournament organizers first).
Game play rules for all divisions/categories
Age
1. All players must be 16+ years of age
Fault Calling
1. Teams will only call faults committed by their own players.
3. Contact an event coordinator for clarification of rules after match is completed.
Behaviour
All players will conduct themselves in a polite and sportsmanlike manner. Although we are here to compete, we are also here to have fun! This isn't the Gold Medal Match of the Olympics, so let's all get along.
Ball/Net Contact
1. All balls must be hit cleanly. No scooping or carrying the ball.
2. Only off of a driven ball may a ball may be double-hit (i.e. off arm and head in one continuous motion).
3. Contact with the net (except for hair) in any way constitutes loss of point. A player that goes under the net but does not contact the net or interfere with the play is okay.
*Note- if the wind pushes the net into a player, then this will not be considered a foul and play should proceed.
4. A served ball may not be blocked, spiked or volleyed directly back over the net.
5. A served ball may be received by volleying the ball, provided it is not volleyed directly back over the net (i.e. the ball may be volleyed to another member of the receiving team).
6. A block or partial block does not count as one of a team’s 3 hits.
7. The ball may be played by any part of the body.
8. No open-handed tipping: Players who contact the ball with one hand and are putting the ball over the net must cleanly hit with the heel or palm of hand (a roll shot), with knuckles of bent fingers (a pokey), or with the back of the hand (locked wrist and locked fingers/knuckles). Accidental paintbrushes are allowed.
9. Balls can be flushed with one hand "soft" on a block/joust.
10. One handed placement or redirection of the ball with the fingers (dink or open-handed tip) is a fault.
11. If a player is going to play the ball into the opponent’s court by setting or volleying, the player must contact the ball with 2 hands above the shoulders and it must be set directly forward or backward in relation to the player’s body (shoulders and hips should be in the same position from prior to the set happening). NO DUMPING! This applies even if it is the team’s 3rd hit. (Turn and burns are OK, and even encouraged. Show us your best bounce).
12. Let serves (tape serves) are legal.
